Medical negligence in decline in Pennsylvania

Since changes in Pennsylvania on medical malpractice in 2003, medical malpratice claims reduced by 39 percent. In 2009, there were a total 1533 medical malpratice filings in the State. In addition, Philadelphia, which sees the majority of the claims of all cities of Pennsylvania saw a 60 percent drop in cases simultaneously.

The new legislation requires lawyers to obtain a certificate of merit for all medical professionals, and testify in the case that claims be filed in the County of occurrence.

Pennsylvania Chief Justice Ronald d. Castille, said, "these two rule changes, Pennsylvania is far ahead of the country and each State in this arena, and we are as a model of reform.  More importantly, justice for our citizens is still being delivered when patients are truly injured by medical errors.
